Last week the Taliban tried to kill a fourteen year-old Pakistani girl because she believed that women should be educated. Malala Yousafzai is her name, and she is from the Swat Valley in Pakistan. While the Taliban and the Pakistani government were fighting in Swat Valley, she was just eleven years old. She would blog about what was happening around her and also wrote against the Taliban for the BBC, which she became famous for. She opposed their extreme ways, and yet she was only an eleven-year-old girl at the time. Malala would give speeches and talk to people about what she believed. She believed that girls and women should have the right to an education, that she has a right to an education, and that the Taliban should not make her stop going to school.

Recently, the Pakistani Taliban attacked Malala Yousafzai and her two friends. The gunman went up to the van when they were on their way home from school, and they asked the girls which one was Malala, and when they pointed her out, they shot her, and before the driver could drive away, they wounded the other two girls. Doctors removed the bullet out of Malala’s neck, but unfortunately she was in critical condition and may have neurological problems due to getting shot. Her two friends are now okay and are getting better. The Taliban say the reason for the attack was because of her blogging and her ideas that oppose the Taliban, like education for women. They say that what she believes is un-Islamic and pro-Western.
Malala is now in a hospital in Birmingham, England, and is expected to make a full recovery. She is able to stand up and write notes instead of talking. Many people in Pakistan are very angry about what happened to Malala. There are people protesting, and they have had enough with the Taliban in Pakistan. Malala getting shot was the last straw for them, and they cannot take it anymore.
I believe what the Taliban did to Malala Yousafzai was a terrible crime. She was only writing what she thought on a blog just like I am. She has the right to speak about what she does not like and what she disagrees with. Malala is only a fourteen-year-old girl. She’s so young and does not deserve to get hurt and almost killed, especially at her age. Why would the Taliban want to kill a girl who is so young? How does she threaten them? She’s just a girl who says and writes her opinion and should be allowed to without being afraid that she’ll get hurt or even killed. I support what she is doing and how she is trying to ensure women can be educated in those parts of Pakistan. I hope she succeeds in her mission and gets what she wants in the world.
In the last few years that my mother lived in Afghanistan, the Taliban were on control. She was forced to quit college, and her education was ended in Afghanistan. When I heard about Malala, it made me think about what also happened to my mother, and how she was forced to do something she did not want to do. She wanted to have an education, and it was very important for her to go to school and learn. Because she was not able to complete her college education in Afghanistan, she is still taking college classes today trying to makeup for lost years when she could have gained her education.
I feel so lucky to have escaped Afghanistan with my mother and was able to live and be raised in the United States. If I were in Afghanistan, there would be a chance that I would not have been able to go to school and have an education and learn. Because I live in the United States, I have the opportunity to succeed in life, to do what I want to, to learn what I want to, and to be who I want to be.
